April’s Guide to the Guild

The River Valley Guild is a multidisciplinary artist collective in the Hudson Valley seeking to build community through creativity.  Each month The Guild hosts artisan markets, educational workshops, and community gatherings, led by different Guild members and community creatives.  Here’s the wrap-up for April’s events coordinated by the River Valley Guild, with the help of our partners and sponsors:

All Month Long:  Artisan Showcase @ Raven Rose

The River Valley Guild has partnered with local Beacon shop, Raven Rose, to bring you a month-long artisan showcase.  Situated at the East End of Main Street in Beacon, Raven Rose is a modern take on the traditional flower and gift shop.  This collaboration spotlights four different Hudson Valley artisans: each week, an artist will be in Raven Rose on Saturday and Sunday to help you shop.  Their collections will remain in store throughout the week.

(P.S.- the rotating artist showcase will return in October with a whole new set of local artisans!)

Artist Schedule:

April 8-15: Exalted Alchemy

Jess Kravits of Exalted Alchemy will be in store from April 8-9, bringing you intentionally-made wellness products that are cruelty-free, natural and Earth-conscious.  Inspired by herbalism, astrology and energy healing, Exalted Alchemy offers candles, skincare, crystals and more – everything for healing your mind, body and soul.

April 16-22: Forage + Sow

From April 16-17, Jenny O’Toole of Forage and Sow will be in the store, bringing you naturally dyed yarn for the mindful maker.  Whether you are a knitting novice or a textile professional, you are sure to find something great for your next artistic endeavor.

April 22-24: River Valley Guild Earth Weekend

While River Valley Guild is a creative collective at its core, special attention is paid to the effects that art-making has on our shared environment.  In an effort to give back and pay homage to the Earth, River Valley Guild has created a weekend-long itinerary packed with sustainable events.  Join us to go out, give back, and get creative.

April 22: Beacon Community Clean-Up @ Long Dock Park

We’ll kick the weekend off with a Beacon Community Clean-Up at Long Dock Park in Beacon from 10am to 12pm.  This event will be led by RVG’s own Jess and Henry from Outward Mind.  Register here and meet us near the kayak rental!

April 22:  Earth Day Workshop: Gifting and Reciprocity

In coordination with Outward Mind, River Valley Guild is hosting an Earth Day workshop that focuses on reframing the ideas of gifting and reciprocity.  The workshop runs from 1pm-3pm, with an additional but optional discussion forum from 3pm-4pm.  Outward Mind was founded by Guild-member Henry Kramer and focuses on reimagining our relationship with the natural world.  Outward Mind mostly offers small-scale, intimate programs focusing on individual relationships to the wider world, through a mixture of philosophy, psychology and meditation.  Attend this event to help deepen your relationship to the world around you.  Register for this event here.

Hours: 1pm-4pm

Cost: suggested donation of $25-$40

*all donations from this workshop will go to local environmental groups*

April 22: RVG x après: Clothing Swap

This Earth Day we are offering you something that will be good for both the planet and your wardrobe!  Join us for this clothing swap organized by an RVG member who is also the founder of the sustainable clothing company, la vie après l’amour.  Clothing swaps such as this one help empty your closet white diverting these gently-worn pieces from landfills.  Doors open at The Yard at 4pm – drop your clothing and grab a drink at this Beacon staple.  Kaitlyn, of la vie après l’amour, will kick off the evening with a talk illuminating the environmental impacts of the fashion industry.  Afterwards, the shopping (swapping) will happen from 5:30-7.  Please no children’s clothing.  Register here and give your wardrobe a refresh!

(We are partnering with a thrift shop to donate left-over clothes).

Hours: 4pm-7pm

Cost: $10

April 23-24: Earth Weekend Market

Join us for our first big market of the season at The Yard in Beacon!  Our artisans offer the best in locally and sustainably-made goods, ensuring that your purchase will also do some good for the Earth and the local economy.  River Valley Guild is made up of Hudson Valley artists who make a variety of goods – stained glass, textile, clay, wellness products inspired by herbalism, to name a few – so there is sure to be something for everyone.  Artists will be present to share their inspirations and creative processes.  There will also be several workshops held throughout the event.

Hours: 10-6, Saturday and Sunday

April 23: Outward Mind River Walk

Henry from Outward Mind will lead this River Walk.  This River Walk exists to deepen your relationship to our local environment.  Henry will lead you through a holistic exploration through the Hudson Valley from 2pm-3pm.  Come join us and get connected with the Earth and the nature of the Hudson Valley.

April 24: Burying Treasure Workshop with Emily Woods

Take a break from the artisan market to learn some planting basics with Emily.  She’ll give you a how-to on composting (even if you don’t have a lot of space!), a run-down on native plants, and advice on planting times and care tips.  Every participant will get a composting cheat-sheet on recycled paper and PDF.  Emily will also have wildflower seeds available: bring a pot to fill up, take a handful to sprinkle around the Hudson Valley, or take some home with one of the pots Emily will provide.

Hours: 1pm-2pm
